Why Microsoft Bing Is Likely To Lose The Search Engine Wars
By Bernie Malonson
I recently started building a new website on June 4, 2009. The site is currently up to 70+ pages of rich content. What is fascinating to me is the responsiveness of each of the major search engines, Google, Yahoo and Bing. Despite all of the fanfare around Bing, I am currently unimpressed. Here is the reason why. This morning I decided to check how many pages have been indexed by each of the engines. Google is in the lead. Most of my pages have been indexed and the Google spiders visit my site almost daily. The pages are beginning to rise in the rankings as well. Yahoo is in second place. Despite having indexed only four pages, I am already in the top 10 for my domain name "desktop self publishing", the site has been authenticated and they are finding most of the backlinks to my site. Bing on the other hand is in a world of its own. Although I have submitted my domain, the spiders have yet to visit and they have no clue I exist. Bing is supposed to be about relevance, but they are setting up arbitrary screens by not including content. It is one thing to spider the site, add it to the index, but not rank it, it is another not to spider the site. I submitted to all three at the same time. It makes me wonder, how much of the web is really being indexed by Bing. I am sure they are focusing on the major sites, but they are leaving a ton of potentially solid sites by the wayside. I am sure that Microsoft is being cautious and looking after its own interests until it gets their algorithms correct. Google and Yahoo on the other hand appear to be thinking of their users and doing their best to get the most relevant information in front of them. I believe Yahoo and Google's strategy will be the winning one. Bernie PS: I will write another post when (if ever) Bing decides to spider my site. |
