Print On Demand Publishing Saves Trees!
By Bernie Malonson
One of the major problems in the book publishing industry is the amount of waste from printing excess books. In order to get the unit cost down, publishers aim for large print runs. Books that go unsold are returned to the publisher, heavily discounted and hopefully recycled. This takes up a tremendous amount of energy and time. Print on demand technology (used by Amazon and others) saves time and money. Books are not printed until ordered. Although the unit cost is higher, shipping costs, space requirements, etc. are lower. There is a tradeoff in the print on demand reduces the need for print shop workers, but it also makes the opportunity to self publish your book more accessible. |
