Lay Out Your Book for Free with LyX The Document Processor By Bernie Malonson If you are interested in saving money on self publishing and have not yet heard about LyX the open source document processor, then get ready to be impressed. LyX is a front end to the LaTeX document processing system, which runs the TeX page layout engine. TeX is a professional document preparation engine that predates the Internet and desktop publishing programs. The goal is to make it easy for ANYONE to format a professionally laid out book. It is used in academia for development of theses, dissertations and especially useful for formatting math and science notation. It is an easy to learn open source program which means, you may not have to pay someone hundreds or thousands of dollars to layout your self published book! Cool! Contributor's Note I have downloaded the program and I am learning how to use it. It is a little different than a WYSIWYG word processor, but once you get the hang of it, its easy.
